None of these accomplishments will influence the image the public will see when thinking of Heather Locklear. She has entered an exclusive club of celebrities with mug shots. From now on her mug shot will appear whenever Locklear’s career is discussed.

Arrested and Photographed

Heather Locklear was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on September 17, 2008 on suspicion of DUI. Officers say alcohol was not involved but there is suspicion of prescription drug use. They say they found the 47-year-old actress parked on the side of a road blocking traffic after a motorist called them saying Locklear was driving erratically. She was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail where the mug was taken.

Famous Mug Shot

The mug shot even makes the public forget about the tabloid images from Locklear’s career. She has had a very active and public social life. Locklear dated Tom Cruise, Scott Baio and married Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. She divorced Lee and married Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi. After Locklear filed for divorce from Sambora, he started dating her good friend and fellow celebrity Denise Richards. All of these activities generated copious amounts of tabloid coverage, yet all those photographs pale compared to Heather Locklear’s mug shot.

If it were not for Heather Locklear’s celebrity and mug shot, this would never have been a story. Instead, the mug shot is being downloaded and talked about all over the world. Just two months earlier, Locklear was at a rehab center in Arizona for anxiety and depression. By all accounts, Locklear is going through a tough time. Yet even those who claim to be her fans are drawn to her pain symbolized by the mug shot.

Tars of Film and TV

The curious part of all this is why the public seems more interested by Heather Locklear’s tough time than her good times. America lives vicariously through its celebrities. We delight in their beauty and glamorous lives. However, there is a morbid fascination with what they look like without their makeup. The mug shot is the ultimate peak beneath the glossy exterior.

Actors and Actresses Arrested

It also makes many people feel better about their own unspectacular lives if someone who apparently has a super life is suffering. That is what is going on here. Heather Locklear is not the first nor the last celebrity to make the mug shot hall of shame. In fact there are many websites devoted to celebrity mug shots. As long as there is a concept of celebrity there will be a demand for their suffering.
